5th Infrastructure Investor Summit 2022

22 June 2022, Munich

Presentation of the conference

Over the past two decades, institutional and private investment in public infrastructure has steadily increased. The long-term and diversified nature of infrastructure projects and the strong return profile have led to the asset class gaining the interest of the fund management, pension fund and insurance industries.

Infrastructure will play a key role, not only in rebuilding economies, but also in the geopolitical shifts that may occur as the world recovers from COVID-19, with the Investment Plan for Europe, the announcement of the Green Recover Budget by the UK, and President Biden’s commitment to a “Green New Deal.”

However, since the start of the COVID-19 lockdowns in Q2 2020, global private infrastructure investment has been trending downward. In Q4/2020, private infrastructure investment was only 60% of Q4/2019 levels.

The 5th Infrastructure Investor Summit will discuss the impact of the virus on the global infrastructure business, from changing market perspectives to industry adjustments along the infrastructure value chain. Finally, the summit will provide an outlook on key trends and developments in 2022.

Infrastructure Themes 2022

Infrastructure Themes 2022

The Evolution of Infrastructure Investing
Historically, the infrastructure asset class has been associated with bridges, toll roads, ports and other real assets that produce long-term, low-risk and consistent cash flows to investors because of the essential nature of the assets. One of the biggest changes is the vast amount of investor capital that is available to be deployed. As demand has outstripped the supply of attractive projects to invest in, investors have tried to identify other assets that retain some of the core elements of public infrastructure, such as data centres, energy infrastructure and renewable energy projects. We take a global look at the health of the infrastructure equity and debt markets in terms of fundraising, valuations and performance, as well as the latest trends in the evolution of infrastructure investing.

Decarbonisation/Carbonomics – Key Themes that Drive the Economics of Net Zero
Achieving deep decarbonisation requires rethinking energy production and consumption and making a radical switch to renewables and low carbon energy sources. We discuss the measures that drive the Economics of Net Zero and the associated opportunities for infrastructure investors.

Digitalisation – The New Infrastructure is Digital
Upcoming major infrastructure projects could focus more on fibre optics and data centres than building roads or airports. We like to review what the accelerated digital developments mean for new and conventional infrastructure projects.
